The article demonstrates a technique which is aimed at enhancing the EFL student's awareness of the grammatical and rhetorical structure of English, and hence at improving his proficiency in reading unadapted, expository texts in English. The crux of the technique hinges on the use of structural paraphrase: a syntactic reformulation of phrases and sentences likely to present difficulty with minimal changes in content vocabulary and little or no recourse to technical linguistic terminology. The technique is illustrated by reference to a 250-word excerpt from a sociological article of the kind college students are required to read. Nine different points-not all of which are meant to be handled in connection with a given short text-are selected for analysis. These include: wording of title, nominalizations, reduced relative clauses, pronominal reference, and punctuation conventions. In each case a rationale is offered for why a particular point merits consideration in the EFL classroom, and a brief description is given of how this point might be treated in class
