What view of underlies second textbooks? Do they treat use as well as structure? Does language mean sounds and forms and patterns, or meanings and their distribution? Do these textbooks assume that speakers have something to say? Consider an approach to analysis that works on the principle that what a speaker means to say determines the basic structure of his utterance. This paper suggests that a generative case grammar serve as a basis for comparing the semantic structures of English and Spanish in the face of their divergent and contrasting surface structures, and that this comparative semantic dimension be included in materials for second instruction
