The association of beauty, both in nature and in art, with the Holy Spirit goes back to the early church and emerges intermittently in theology, in widely different eras and places. I trace the development of this theme briefly, concentrating on its treatment by Jonathan Edwards. I end by discussing why beauty has been discussed relatively rarely by theologians, especially in connection with the Holy Spirit, and suggest that the topic is of vital concern now, not just for theology but for the life of the church
