This is a book aimed at practitioners involved in post-qualification training in children and family social work. I tend to measure the value of a social work text by its impact upon my own thinking about practice and by its ability to spur further interrogation of the subject matter. On that basis, this book scores highly and contains some real gems. The book has original insights and signposts to relevant literature and research, some of it not quoted elsewhere. The attempt at a universal explanation of what constitutes good parenting (p. 28), which acknowledges that this is a social and political construct (as, it also later states, is ‘risk’), is an example. I was also struck by the statement that children and family workers are often the only actors in a vulnerable child's life who cannot ‘walk away’ (p. 144). The book, of course, explores territory covered by huge volumes of other contemporary writings and the writer set herself an enormous task in narrowing her field to the themes covered in this book's 280 pages. The average reader will probably be looking for a summary of issues surrounding advanced practice and a shortcut to other study material. The book should be judged on how it achieves this aspiration.
