A new frontier has opened on Egyptian contributions to the Western expeditions of the early twentieth century, thanks to the 2006 (re)discovery in Egypt of more than seventy Harvard University-Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition Diaries written by the Diraz family of reises from Quft. Recent attempts to do justice to unnamed and unheralded Egyptian archaeologists have lacked such a treasure trove of written data: thousands of pages of Arabic text and sketches provided by Egyptian reises who were trained by George Reisner (1867–1942), director of the Expedition. A summary history is given of the main archaeological players of the Diraz family from el-Qal‘a, Quft (Part 1), followed by the author’s account of the discovery and recent history of the Arabic diary books in Egypt (Part 2). A brief discussion of their significance, with a few examples, is provided next (Part 3). The Arabic diaries form part of a new data-mining project since they offer us a reassessment of the role of Egyptians in what are usually described as Western excavations in Egypt.
