Medieval Dover Castle has been the subject of many histories, but this article seeks to trace through documentary sources the influence of artillery on castle and town defences from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, and to set the Dover fortifications in a national context. At its strongest Dover ranked with the major naval bases and probably nowhere else is it still possible to see such a concentrated and varied array of defences of all periods
