Concern about the treatment of polytomous variables in multiway contingency analysis has been expressed by Reynolds (1977). A partial response to the concern is offered by the technique of partitioning (Duncan, 1975), which is especially appropriate when the polytomy represents a set of qualitatively distinct categories.
