This paper examines elements of intertextuality between a modern short story and a classical maqāma. “Al-Naqra masdūda”, a 1971 short story by the late Tunisian writer al-Bashīr Khurayyif, recalls al-Hamadhānī's most famous work, “al-Maqāma al-madīriyya”, in subtle yet remarkable ways. In addition to being an appealing work in its own right, “al-Naqra masdūda” represents an original way of interacting with classical Arabic literary heritage
