Until recently, the study of Alf Laylah wa Laylah was undertaken without reference to folkloristic theories, research tools, or methods. Meanwhile, folk literature indexes were developed with minimal input from Arab and Islamic traditions. 'Theories' concerning creativity, national character, society, etc. emerged on bases of the incomplete data offered. Other approaches proved impressionistic and non-representative. A Motif Index of Alf Laylah will offer inclusive analysis of the themes constituting this classical literary work, thus bridging the gulf between its texts and their oral folkloric counterparts. It also will assist in determining the extent to which a thesis is characteristic of a culture or social group
