A member of the President's Commission on the Human Immunodeficiency\nVirus Epidemic reviews the Commission's work. Gebbie, who represented the\npublic health community, briefly summarizes what the Commission did and did\nnot accomplish in attempting to carry out its charge to "advise the President\nand Secretary of Health and Human Service and other relevant cabinet heads on\npublic health dangers including medical, legal, ethical, social and economic\nimpact, from the spread of the HIV and resulting illnesses." She concludes\nwith an argument for increased funding for state public health departments\nwhich have a major role to play in controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic. (KIE\nabstract)
