actual population value can be viewed as an interpretational gap that is bridged only if one adopts a tentative "auxilia- ry" hypothesis that the finding is not a manifestation of the statistical guaran- tee of occasional false positive exclusions. With additional confirmatory studies, that auxiliary hypothesis would be further supported and the interpretational gap would be narrowed but not closed. However, for many studies in which values of interest are excluded with a specified level of statistical con- fidence, this particular auxiliary hy- pothesis regarding chance may in fact be more reasonable than are other im- plicit auxiliary hypotheses such as that of freedom from residual confounding or that of unbiased measurement
