An attempt was made to compare subjective and psychometric procedures in assessing the viability of paraprofessional selection. Although volunteers in this study were selected by a group interview on the basis of several helping characteristics, psychometric assessment of these same characteristics failed to distinguish selected from rejected volunteers. The results were discussed in terms of the relative importance of self-selection as compared to extensive paraprofessional assessment procedures.
