Field training in community-social psychology at the University of Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts, combines self-directed learning and a competency-based educational model in a year-long program. This paper describes the development and implementation of this program during its first 2 years. Relationships among different components of the program are discussed, and those between the university, the psychology department, and the community are detailed. We identify selected unresolved areas of concern and extend an invitation for dialogue.
