The publication of Brecht's Arbeitsjournal (1938-1955) makes it possible for us to ascertain Brecht's position regarding the domestic and foreign policies of the USSR under Stalin. The Arbeitsjournal contain mainly political notes which also discuss “literary themes.” Brecht visited the Soviet Union three times. His first visit was in the spring of 1935, a period between the assassination of Kirov and the Seventh Congress of Komintern. Six years later, shortly before the Nazi invasion in 1941, while on his way to the ‘New World,’ Brecht travelled from Finland to Vladivostok. This time Brecht did not meet many of the friends that he had come to known in 1935
