It seems impossible for any serious observer to hazard a forecast about Italy's political future. One can, however, inquire about what happened to the federalist theme of the Northern League, focusing on recent shifts in its ideological and strategic line. The numerous commentaries dealing with the League's last convention held February 10-12, 1995 in Milan have not emphasized sufficiently that it may be the outcome of an evolution which dates back to the end of 1993, when the League first began to participate in parliamentary debates. This participation, however, was not their objective or at least it should have been only a tactical one
