May the reader be spared ever having to experience a situation in which he can no longer read, can use everyday language only fragmentarily and must regain his own experiences, his own world of concepts, and much more, in a long and painful process full of steps forward and backward. How can one still be a "socialist" or a "Marxist," or how can one become so again? One thing, no doubt, motivated me most strongly: the desire to live and to be able to work and struggle again — without quite realizing what a long, painstaking and complicated process this would be
