As a young Hungarian economist noted, “Were you to compare the samizdat work with what appears in the regular journals, often you would have trouble noticing a difference.” And certainly in Hungary today, the line between criticism and dissent is a thin one — so thin, in fact, that an author can frequently write more piercing social commentary remaining within “permissible” bounds than going beyond them. The works of Miklós Haraszti and Gyorgy Moldova are illustrative in this regard. Both write within a well-established Hungarian tradition of sociography, a genre that shades off into realistic fiction while also broaching empirical sociology
