Henceforth, the terms "socialism" and "communism" will have to be abandoned. Of course, the meaning attached to words is conventional and arbitrary. But this means that the meaning of a word is what it has finally become through actual historical usage. To give a purer meaning to the tribe's words is perhaps the poet's or the philosopher's task, but certainly not the politician's. Whether we like it or not, for most people today socialism means the regime established in Russia and similar countries — "really existing socialism," as Brezhnev aptly put it — a regime that carries on exploitation, oppression, totalitarian terror, and cultural cretinization on a scale unparalleled in the history of mankind
