Conservative politicians, social scientists and journalists often accuse “leftist” social theories of having prepared the ground for terrorism. Representatives of such theories often find it difficult, if not impossible, to react to such accusations if they prematurely step onto their opponents' terrain and accept the defensive role of the accused. For instance, the charge is made that certain statements or arguments from Marx, Adorno or Marcuse can be rediscovered, at least implicitly, in the pronouncements of the RAF (the terrorist Red Army Fraction). The person so accused, eager to prove his innocence, has no other choice but to show that the authors did not mean what the terrorists claim
