“Deep ecology” principles are more than a new philosophy of nature. Deep ecologists have provided the basic inspiration for numerous bioregional, national and even transnational political action groups. Local “place defense” organizations across America, Western Europe and Japan, like oppositions to new hydroelectric dams, powerlines, airports, highways, timbering programs, dredging and draining schemes or power plants, draw from deep ecological ideas. On a regional level, ecological resistance to new nuclear weaponry systems, nuclear power stations, military bases or communications networks have often drawn guidance from deep ecology. Many radical activists, like the “eco-raiders” or “monkey-wrenchers” of the American Southwest and Pacific Northwest, also have deep ecological sympathies
