As can be seen from the number of works and commentaries now available in translation, Schmitt studies are alive and well in die US. Also symptomatic of this phenomenon are the categories of commentators: Schmitt scholars; Left-Schmittians; and Right-Schmittians. Bill Scheuerman has added another category he calls "young Schmittians," and Scheuerman himself is a member of the not inconsiderable cohort of crude Schmittians. In a review of Bernd Rüthers' Carl Schmitt im Dritten Reich, instead of discussing the book Scheuerman launches a broadside against what he calls "young Schmittians" — especially the American ones. He holds them responsible for "the so-called Schmitt renaissance that has taken place both in North America and Western Europe in the last decade" and characterizes this development as a "fine example of how intellectuals can contribute to 'societal unlearning'" (71)
