Jorge Luis Borges once wrote that Baroque is an example of style which exhausts its own possibilities and borders on becoming a caricature of itself. The final stage of any art is baroque when it reveals and destroys its own means of expression. Poland is now living through just such a baroque phase of the system called “really existing socialism.” This system's structural principles have been laid bare through their ostentatious and baroque use. Disguising formal measures and stylistic ornaments previously employed to tone down the obsessiveness of manner have been exhausted. Moreover, the barriers of imagination characterizing popular consciousness in the ‘70s, which involved the reification of power structures perceived as an unavoidable affliction, disappeared during the stormy period of Solidarity
