The Palestine Conflict is characterized by the fact that in its perception by Jewish Israelis, experiences play a role which did not emerge from the conflict itself. Instead there is prior consciousness which is saturated with images from Western history, especially the recent German-European past. This peculiarity cannot be explained solely with reference to the fact that a significant number of Israeli Jews are of European origin whose biographical experiences with the old Europe have been accumulated in the state of Israel. Certainly the Jews, as a traditionally extraterritorial people, carry around more world history in their collective consciousness than other peoples
