In the development of Polanyi's thought there were breaks with modes of thought which were rediscovered in later periods. Yet there is an unbroken line — the concern with freedom, the celebration of the culture of the common people, the search for a human socialism as the only true expression of democracy — themes dearly rooted in his life and work in Europe. Toward the end of his life, Polanyi outlined a book, Freedom in a Complex Society (1957), which was to remain unwritten. It was his intention to expand The Great Transformation “beyond the brief hints on which that book closed.”
