1984 marked the twentieth anniversary of military dictatorships in the Southern Cone, beginning with the coup d'etat in Brazil in 1964, and continuing with the Argentine military regimes of 1966 and 1976 and the Chilean and Uruguayan ones of 1973. The longevity of several of these regimes, their brutality, common traits, and originality vis à vis other Latin American dictatorships have generated considerable interest. Several of these regimes have ended while odiers are nearing the end. All of them have failed to carry out their national projects. Yet, there is no doubt as to die extent of their impact on the future development of their respective societies
