During the last twenty years or so literally thousands of books dealing with Karl Marx have inundated the market. The appearance ofthe Paris Manuscripts in 1921 and the Grundrisse in 1939, both was caused by and further developed an intellectual and political ferment over Marx that, due to Stalin's petrified theory and practice, was long overdue. As we might expect, North America did not “discover” these texts until more than twenty years later, when the English translations appeared (Manuscripts: 1959; a small section of the Grundrisse: 1965). The doors have been opened. Why? I have said that it was an intellectual and political ferment that brought about the release of these two important texts
