This volume of slightly over a hundred pages was first published in the USSR in 1933; the present edition is a republication of a 1938 translation by the New York Critics Group edited by Angel Flores with the addition of updated footnotes and a short preface. In 1930, Lifshitz and Lukács met in Moscow at the Marx-Engels Institute and worked together, becoming very close friends; and Lifshitz' book is written soon after the recovery of many of Marx's early writings from the gnawing mice to which they had been consigned. In this intellectual context, shortly before the onset of the heaviest Stalinist repression in the late thirties, Lifshitz insists on the unity of Marx's thought and his development of a subject-object dialectics of praxis which, in Marx's sense, is fundamentally humanist: communist society is oriented toward the unfettered development of whole individuals
