The essay first appeared in November, 1920 in Kommunismus (subtitled, “Journal of the Communist International for Countries of Southeastern Europe”) which was published by the Communist Party of German-Austria under the editorial direction of Gerhart Eisler. The journal itself, though short-lived — February 1920 to September 1921 — was the most important Central European forum of debate within the Third International in the latter's formative years. Its staff included and was decisively influenced by a number of Hungarian Communists — among them, Lukács, Josef Revai, and Bela Fogarasi who, along with Karl Korsch, emerged as spokesmen for what came to be known as “Western Marxism” in distinction from the Moscow-centered brand — and who had fled from Budapest to Vienna following the collapse of the Bela Kun-led “Hungarian Soviet Republic” (August, 1919) and the takeover by Horthy's facist regime
