The pictures are strikingly similar: stone-throwing, street barricades, army reprisals, consumer boycotts, school closures, press censorship, permanent emergencies. Perceptive friends of Israel warn that turning Israel into another South Africa will be a moral victory for the Palestinians. Continued control over the West Bank and Gaza, writes Shlomo Avineri, “means continued oppression of a million-and-a-half Palestinians and a slow ‘South Africanization’ of Israel.” Other academics point to the obvious resentment of such analogies: “Most Israelis exhibit a profound reluctance to come to terms with the substance and ramifications of the comparison between themselves and white South Africa.” Yet the chairman of the Israeli League for Human and Civil Rights, Israel Shahak bluntly states: “Conditions are actually, theoretically and officially worse than in South Africa.”
