Many authors have located a paradox in Foucault's earlier work, specifically in his analysis of power and its ethical and political implications. While seemingly concerned with unmasking the modus operandi of power relations, he refuses to identify with any critical project seeking to overcome existing modes of domination. This state of affairs has been explained in a variety of ways. Allegedly, he could not allow a privileged political position because this would have entailed a privileged epistemological position. According to Foucault, all regimes of power are regimes of truth and to postulate a privileged position of power is also to postulate a corresponding privileged position of truth
