If anything can compare to Hegel's immense influence, it is the mystery surrounding Hegelian texts. The dialectic appears as a magic whose secret no commentator has penetrated. If the concept appears as self-knowledge, knowledge remains an in-itself which has not yet become for us. From this viewpoint, the publication of Alexandre Kojève's celebrated course on the Phenomenology of Mind is invaluable. For the first time, explication gives the text concrete meaning in relation to real facts. Although it remains to be shown in detail, Marx recognized the movement of human history in the development of self-consciousness. Kojève's commentary is a work of unique brilliance and profound originality
