These two books are affiliated with the Frankfurt school of Marxism. This tradition has recently been the subject of an interesting critical analysis by Therborn, to which this review is a response. The books under review correct several misconceptions of Therborn's analysis; moreover, the confrontation of Therborn and the Frankfurt school representatives sharpens the questions posed by the work of the Frankfurt theorists. Therborn's critique of the Frankfurt school is not only the latest of a series of articles published in New Left Review, critical of any form of Hegelian Marxism, but is also the best. It is a well-informed, careful expression and critique of the works of the three main theorists of the Frankfurt school: Max Horkheimer, Theodore Adorno, and Herbert Marcuse
