Is there a spiritual crisis of the university? The question is not new. It emerges regularly each time profound changes affect institutions entrusted with dispensing knowledge; it crops up everywhere, among professors and industrialists as well as in French state circles whose responsibility is to reduce imbalances between new socioeconomic needs and organizational delays in universities. From this viewpoint, however, the problem remains confined within a sociology of dysfunctions, whose conclusions aim only at adapting an old institution to a new social situation. But since the notion of a spiritual crisis (in the German sense) goes beyond the university, it must be understood as just one facet of the spiritual crisis undermining the Western world in general and Europe in particular
