There is a specter haunting America: fear of the destruction of the majority culture embodied in the individualism and dominance of the white middle class. Such an apocryphal vision, first framed at the political fringe, has increasingly spread to the mainstream. In the process, conventional “liberal” vs. “conservative” cleavages have given way to “pluralist” versus “melting pot” concepts of American society, with the core majority becoming an embattled and increasingly powerless minority. This new understanding of problems of poverty, crime, education, governmental action — even artistic expression — defies the view of American society as tolerant, diverse, and optimistic about the future
