The forthcoming publication of Adorno's Sociology of Music in English constitutes a significant event. It further indicates that the time has come to comment on the present state of the sociology of music. This is necessitated by the continuing German monopoly and almost total indifference in the United States. Since Adomo dominated this branch of sociology for three and one-half decades, it is appropriate to ask, half a dozen years after his death, whether there are any new directions in musico-sociological thought. Since Arnold Schoenberg is of major importance in the musical thought of Adorno, it is tempting to comment on the present state of the sociology of music by allusion to Schoenberg's major work, the fragmentary opera Moses and Aaron: the field has been blessed with intelligent and dedicated leadership, motivated by an often visionary view, but entrance into the Promised Land has not yet been gained
