That Lukács' works in aesthetics after 1930 form a unitary block is widely accepted. More controversial is their location in his intellectual and political development. It is well known that around 1930 there is a turning point in Lukács' perspective meant to break with those “idealistic” elements which had led to the condemnation of History and Class Consciousness by the Third International. After 1930 Lukács returned to aesthetics, thus continuing the studies of his pre-Marxist period which had been interrupted by the revolutionary wave following the October Revolution. But it was more than a mere revival of old interests, or a tactical retreat to grounds safe from the attacks of Party bureaucrats. It was a revival of certain positions already foreshadowed in his early “existentialist” works which, in a different context, came to obtain their most consistent formulation
