The problem of mass revolutionary consciousness and the conditions of its development have been a central concern of both revolutionaries and some academic sociologists and political scientists. The assertion that mass revolutionary consciousness is a condition of radical social change (whether by this is meant the seizure of power or the transformation of the core institutional order) was long ago made by writers as divergent in their approaches as Marx and Tocqueville, but neither of them developed an adequate sociological analysis of revolutionary consciousness. Marx, particularly, did provide some of the basic propositions for the development of such an analysis but, with notable exceptions, later writers have added surprisingly little
