The publisher must have decided he needed a book on perestroika, and fast. Kerblay must have offered his growing file of quotes and observations to the translator, Rupert Sawyer, who earlier translated Kerblay's carefully produced and widely read book, Modern Soviet Society. Six months later, Kerblay attached what he calls “second thoughts,” and the book was rushed to the stands. In addition to the larger structural shape of the book, several things suggest a hurried production. Internal contradictions remain, repetitions abound, and errors of translation and transliteration have not been weeded out. The index is a slapdash summary of only some of the items in the text
