It is impossible to separate workers' demands and their forms of organization and struggle from questions of political organization (the question of the party). It is tantamount to accepting and legitimating the idea of two fields of reality separated in fact and in principle. In the one, workers are concerned with their immediate demands, trying to achieve them through specific forms of struggle and regrouping in organizations with well-defined objectives (essentially trade unions). The other field is dominated by militants who, qualitatively different from the workers, define themselves by a coherent ideology and a corresponding “maximum” program, and who organize around issues only insofar as they can be instrumental in achieving the organizers' own ends
