on population problems several techniques of induction and deduction used by demographers. Students are given a graph showing that the rate of natural increase for Japan dropped dramatically for the single year 1966. Several possible causes for the drop are suggested, and the students eventually eliminate all but a cultural factor as being the major cause. The exercise clearly demonstrates the important interrelationships between demographic, social organization, and cultural variables, even in a country like Japan, which is in many respects one of the most developed in the world. Evaluation of the utility of the exercise over several administrations is also included
