Textbook bashing probably ranks second only to complaining about administrators as the most popular lament among academics. Criminologists certainly are exception to the rule-in the many workshops and roundtables on teaching criminology that I have chaired over the years, one striking consensus has been that there is no such thing as a good criminology textbook. Here I will show that this complaint contains much truth. This essay reviews 10 of the 12 criminology textbooks published from 1987 to 1989 (see Wright 1989), including the following
