One objective of using popular songs to teach sociology is to facilitate the identification, definition, and analysis of sociological concepts by providing the lyrics of selected songs as relevant examples of certain perspectives and topics. A second objective is to arouse the students' interest in the material. As E. Y. Harburg, the great lyricist of Broadway and Hollywood, once observed, Words make you think. Music makes you feel. Songs make you feel thoughts. A third objective is to show students how massmedia products such as popular songs-normally listened to in nonacademic settings-can enhance sociological understanding
