ployment. This has resulted in a trend in enrollment away from the liberal arts disciplines such as sociology and toward business and professional schools. Three basic responses by sociology departments to the enrollment crisis are the hang-on responses, the spin-offs into specialty areas, and the applied sociology response. This is a case study in which the response is different from the above three. This article shows how one department in an urban university has responded to this challenge by returning to a somewhat more traditional (structured) curriculum. Within thisframework, it developed areas of concentration and also grafted a paralegal program onto the traditional undergraduate program in sociology. The preliminary results suggest that it is possible to provide applied components within a traditional curriculum without sacrificing the essential liberal educational benefits of the discipline's program
