The interpretation of the common sherd and lithic scatter has been a vexing problem for archaeologists working in the Sonoran Desert region of southern Arizona. In contrast to their upland desert counterparts, the lowland variety of this site type exhibits neither diagnostic assemblages nor distinctive locational characteristics. Because of these and other factors, only relatively general inferences have been developed for these sites. Unfortunately, much of their variability goes unexplained. The difficulties surrounding the interpretation of lowland sherd and lithic scatters are reviewed and a detailed analysis of one site is conducted. The results provide the foundation for a new interpretive framework. It is concluded that a consideration of the importance and technological requirements of storage and of nonedible resource processing in desert survival strategies provides important clues for understanding the variability of these nondescript sites
