In JFA 4, Number 4, we published an article by Donald A. Graybill, describing archeological site destruction in a portion of the SW United States. The following article, by William Lovis, provides equally startling statistics documenting the loss of sites in a portion of the Great Lakes region. This article was first published in the Newsletter of the American Society for Conservation Archeology (ASCA), and is republished here with the permission of the author and ASCA.We are interested in publishing more articles of this kind, documenting the rate and nature of archeological site destruction throughout the world, and/or documenting changes in these variables that may occur (or may not occur) with the implementation of protective laws and preservation programs. Such a documentary record will be valuable in future efforts to improve upon existing archeological statutes, programs, and international agreements.Readers of this section will be interested in a debate that is developing in Current Anthropology (CA) over the international ramifications of “Cultural Resource Management.” Commenting on an article by Schiffer and House, Donn Bayard of Otago University has accused archeologists in the industrialized nations of being spendthrifts compared to those working in the “Third World.” Several of us have taken Bayard to task in response, and to judge from manuscripts that Bayard and I, at least, have just submitted to CA, the debate promises to continue
