The subject of law and oral history has been directly approached in its broad outlines in two previous national oral history colloquiums. E. Douglas Hamilton treated the subject in 1967 under the title History and the Law of Libel.l His talk provided a fine discussion of libel, and included informative comments on privacy and copyright. In 1969, H. Mason Welch spoke on A Lawyer Looks at Oral History.2 He touched on a number of legal problems, and especially emphasized practical aspects of law which might affect the legal principles. Some other articles, as gleaned from Waserman's Bibliography On Oral History, relate to legal issues, but none with much breadth.3 For additional information the reader may want to refer to a legal encyclopedia or to one of the numerous general treatises of the legal areas discussed later.
