As the title suggests, ApePs study traces the development of Peirce's thought through the sixty years of his prolific philosophical career. This study is a must for all serious students of American philosophy in general and for Peirce scholars in particular. It is intelligent and sensitive. It succeeds in situating Peirce's work among the thinkers of his own time and points out in great clarity its relevance for the intellectual challeges of our time, theoretical and practical. Dr. Krois, therefore, is to be thanked for making available in such readable English this perceptive and provocative interpretative study. Some may find it odd, even ironic, that one of the most thorough and sympathetic appreciations of Peirce's work should come from a German philosopher. But when we recall the impact of German Idealism on 19th century American thought in general1 and on Peirce in particular this is somewhat less surprising. Peirce tells us himself that he was nurtured philosophically on Kant's Critique and, as Apel points out, a major aim of Peirce's enterprise was to effect a synthesis between Kant and the British Empiricists. The reader will recall, too, that Peirce's correction of Kant's categorical scheme and the subsequent realization of the central role of mediation (continuity) in constituting the real led Peirce to say of himself, My philosophy resuscitates Hegel, though
