According to his colleague Teng Ssu-yu, what the modem biographer of Zhu Yuanzhang, Wu Han, knew about the Ming founder before he began his historical research in Beijing in 1931 was probably absorbed from his youth in Zhejiang in Yiwu County, Jinhua Prefecture. For six crucial months during Zhu's campaign against the Mongol rulers at the end of the Yuan dynasty he had occupied the area of Jinhua in central Zhejiang, the place where Wu Han lived as a boy. The local people, strongly conscious of their history, had never forgotten it
