During the first years of the sixteenth century a great change took place in the Imperial City. The Cheng-te emperor (r. 1506–1521) moved out of the residential palaces in the Forbidden City and into a new residence in the northwestern part of the Imperial City near a place called the Leopard Quarter. He lived there and conducted the business of the imperial government there from 1508 until his death in 1521
