Since completing my preliminary survey of the modern bibliography on Li Chih, which appeared in MING STUDIES, 6:17–27 (Spring, 1978), I gained access to a recent source book on this important Ming thinker, a collection of periodical articles published in the People's Republic in 1974–75 that had hitherto eluded my attention. This is the LI CHIH HSIN-P'ING (A New Appraisal of Li Chih), compiled by Chin Ju-chieh and published by the Sun Chau Book Company ( ) in Hong Kong, 198 pp., dated November 1975. It is a reprinting of the major articles on Li Chih that appeared in various forms of publications during these two years of the turbulent “Criticism of Lin Piao, Criticism of Confucius” and “Pro-Legalist, Anti-Confucian” campaigns in the mainland, campaigns which have subsequently been exposed and denounced since late 1976 as political camouflage for the treacherous intrigues of the “Gang of Four.” It also includes several specimens of illustrative materials on Li Chih: his portrait, photographs of his former residence, and facsimiles of his major writings originally published in JEN-MIN HUA-PAO (China Pictorial) (October, 1975), as well as two appendices listing biographical and bibliographical materials not reprinted in this collection
